Functional Fitness Training

Functional fitness exercises train your muscles to work together and prepare them for daily tasks by simulating common movements you might do at home, at work or in sports. While using various muscles in the upper and lower body at the same time, functional fitness exercises also emphasize core stability.

For example, a squat is a functional exercise because it trains the muscles used when you rise up and down from a chair or pick up low objects. By training your muscles to work the way they do in everyday tasks, you prepare your body to perform well in a variety of common situations.

Functional exercises tend to be multijoint, multimuscle exercises. Instead of only moving the elbows, for example, a functional exercise might involve the elbows, shoulders, spine, hips, knees and ankles. This type of training, properly applied, can make everyday activities easier, reduce your risk of injury and improve your quality of life.

Functional exercise training may be especially beneficial as part of a comprehensive program for adults to improve balance, agility and muscle strength, and reduce the risk of falls.  As you add more functional exercises to your workout, you should see improvements in your ability to perform your everyday activities and, thus, in your quality of life. Types Of SliverSneaker® Classes Offered:

  • SliverSneaker® Classic: Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement and activities for daily living.  Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a SilverSneakers® ball are offered for resistance.  A chair is used for seated and/or standing support
  • SilverSneakers® Circuit: Combine fun with fitness to increase your cardiovascular and muscular endurance power with standing circuit workout.  Upper-body strength work with hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a SilverSneakers® ball is alternated with low-impact aerobic choreography.  A chair is offered for support, stretching and relaxation exercises.
  • SilverSneakers® Yoga: Move your whole body through a complete series of seating and standing yoga poses.  Chair support is offered to safely perform a variety of seated and standing postures designed to increase flexibility, balance and a range of movement.  Restorative breathing exercises and final relaxation will promote stress reduction and mental clarity.

 

 

Sports Enhancement Training

For an athlete, the goal of sport-specific training is to improve speed and agility and avoid injury through proper technique and mechanics. Sport-specific training must replicate competitive situations and movement patterns. If done properly, it can give any athlete “the competitive edge.”

We offer unique sport-specific training in a variety of different sports.  Our programs focus on core, stability, conditioning, flexibility, power, reaction, and proprioception. For example, we offer pitching classes for baseball players and linebacker classes for football players. We also offer several different programs for anyone looking to improve their strength, speed, agility and flexibility to give them “the edge.” If you’re a competitive athlete looking to improve your skills, our team of physical therapists, certified personal trainers, and exercise physiologists can customize a program for your sport.
