Vestibular Therapy

What is vestibular therapy?
Vestibular rehabilitation is an education and movement-based treatment program designed to reduce the symptoms of a vestibular disorder and in some cases help it to go away completely. It helps restore balance and reduces the risk of falling. Individuals that can benefit from vestibular therapy are those who suffer from dizziness, imbalance, various types of vertigo, migraines, head injuries, etc. Physical therapists start with a thorough evaluation to determine the source of the vestibular imbalance and create an individualized treatment plan from there. Typically, they will prescribe specific head-eye movements with various body postures, strength and balance exercises, gait training, and gradual exposure to various sensory and motor environments. The goal is to improve the quality of life and enable the patient to continue to improve after discharge.
