I was first introduced to physical therapy in 2010 in my undergraduate studies at Oakland University where I attended an informational meeting about their Doctorate of Physical Therapy program. Like many of my friends, I was undecided about what career I wanted to pursue and was weighing the options of majoring in mechanical engineering, teaching, or ‘something’ in the health care field. After the informational meeting, I was no longer undecided. I chose to pursue a career as a physical therapist as it perfectly blended my interests in engineering, teaching, and health care. As a physical therapist, I get to problem solve and find the best solution for each individual patient (engineering), empower my patients with the knowledge of how their body works and how to help it heal (teaching), and make a direct positive impact in their lives (‘something’ in the health care field). Over the years, I have been extremely fortunate to have had great mentorship not only at Oakland University as a student but also as a physical therapist at an independent clinic where I practiced for the first seven years of my career. Understanding the importance of mentorship, I assist in teaching classes at Oakland University to both physical therapy students in the DPT curriculum and physical therapists looking to obtain additional training in manual physical therapy through Oakland University’s OMPT program. I believe physical therapy has the ability to make an extraordinarily positive impact on people’s lives. Not only does it focus on movement as a primary healing modality, but it enables providers to spend time and build relationships with patients, an ever increasing rarity in today’s health care space. I have the ability to listen to my patients tell me their own unique stories and I have the responsibility to figure out how to be a positive influence on their stories. HealthQuest is committed to delivering the best possible physical therapy care to all patients and I am excited to continue my journey with them.
