Throwing Athlete Rehabilitation
How We Treat Overhead Athletes
At HealthQuest Physical Therapy, we understand that throwing is a total-body explosive movement. Our Throwing Athlete Rehabilitation Specialist (TARS) program, a certification earned through the Overhead Athletic Institute (OAI), is designed specifically for athletes who rely on their arm to perform, including baseball players, softball players, quarterbacks, and volleyball players.
We don’t just treat the site of the pain. We identify the root cause, correct dysfunctional movement patterns, and build a more resilient athlete from the ground up.
Our Philosophy: The Kinetic Chain
Throwing injuries rarely occur in isolation; they are the result of a breakdown somewhere in the kinetic chain that leads to compensation which increases load on the shoulder or elbow. By addressing the entire kinetic chain, we help athletes reduce pain, improve velocity, and decrease the risk of re-injury.
Your Path Back to the Field: A 4-Step Process
Step 1: Comprehensive Athlete Specific Assessment
Every recovery begins with a deep dive into your biomechanics. We evaluate your range of motion, identify muscle imbalances, and review your injury history to build a plan tailored to your specific needs.
Step 2: Targeted Clinical Treatment
We focus on restoring joint mechanics and reducing inflammation using advanced techniques, including:
- Manual Therapy: To restore joint and tissue mobility.
- Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) Training: For safe strength gains without overloading the joint.
- Neuromuscular Re-education: To “re-wire” proper movement patterns.
Step 3: Strength & Performance Training
Once pain is managed, we shift to durability. We focus on scapular control, rotator cuff resiliency, and lower-body explosiveness. Due to the highly specific nature of throwing and the unique demands placed on the structures of the shoulder and elbow it is essential to create program that replicates the types of load and joint orientation that occurs during throwing.
Step 4: Specialized Return-to-Throwing
A safe return to competition requires expert supervision. While HealthQuest handles your clinical rehabilitation, we refer our athletes to our partner company, the Overhead Athletic Institute (OAI), for the final phase of recovery.
The OAI provides a structured, progressive throwing program that includes an assessment of each athlete’s throwing biomechanics and interventions specifically targeted to eradicating inefficiencies and compensations that contribute to injury and poor performance. This is essential to ensure a seamless transition from the clinic back to the mound or the field.
