Movement Is Medicine: Moving Past Pain with Physical Therapy
October is Physical Therapy Month, a time to celebrate the powerful impact of physical therapy on daily life. At HealthQuest Physical Therapy, we’re dedicated to helping you move better, feel stronger, and take control of your health—safely and effectively. This month, we’re focusing on how physical therapy can reduce opioid use, help you overcome pain, and empower lasting wellness.
PT reduces opioid use after musculoskeletal injuries and surgeries in several populations.
Physical therapy offers a patient-centered, evidence-based approach to managing pain. Our licensed therapists begin with a thorough assessment to identify the root causes of your discomfort and then tailor a plan that fits your life. We combine hands-on manual therapy with targeted exercises, neuromuscular re-education, education about movement strategies, and, when appropriate, modalities
Pain management through physical therapy
PT is as effective as or more effective than usual care for chronic neck and back pain in many trials.
For common strains/sprains, PT plus early return-to-work programs often reduce time off work by about 1–2 weeks vs. delayed PT. Visual: clock/time-to-return bars.
For knee/hip OA and some back conditions, PT can delay or reduce the need for surgery in a meaningful share of patients. Visual: yes/no on need for surgery with/without PT.
PT can lower overall healthcare costs in musculoskeletal care when used early and appropriately. Visual: cost comparison (PT-first vs. surgery-first or non-PT pathways).
Patients who receive prehab (preoperative PT) and/or postoperative PT often have better functional outcomes and quicker recovery after joint replacement. Visual: improved functional score or shorter rehab period.
