Happy Hips, Happy Summer: Mobility and Strength Made Easy

Happy Hips, Happy Summer: Mobility and Strength Made Easy

Summer brings a parade of activities: swimming, biking, hiking, beach volleyball, and plenty of casual strolls, trips, and travel. At HealthQuest Physical Therapy, we see a simple truth often overlooked: hip mobility and strength are foundational for both summer adventures and everyday living. When your hips move well and are strong, you move with less pain, more efficiency, and greater enjoyment—whether you’re chasing a volleyball over the sand or simply walking through a busy airport.

1) How hip mobility supports summer activities

Swimming
  • The hips drive the kicking motion and help stabilize your pelvis in the water. Limited hip mobility can lead to compensations in the low back or knee joints, wasting energy and causing fatigue.
  • Strong hips improve propulsion and efficiency in the water, helping you swim longer with less effort.
Biking
  • Pedal stroke efficiency relies on a smooth hip hinge and a stable pelvis. Hip mobility allows for full extension and a powerful push, while hip strength helps control the pedal through the full cycle.
  • Poor hip mobility can cause improper form, leading to knee or lower back discomfort after longer rides.
Hiking
  • Hiking demands repetitive hip flexion and extension on variable terrain. Adequate hip mobility reduces extra stress on the lumbar spine and knees.
  • Strong hips help with uphill climbs, balance on uneven ground, and reduce fatigue over long distances.
Beach Volleyball
  • Lateral movements, quick changes of direction, and jumping all rely on hip stability and strength.
  • Hip mobility supports safer landings and reduces strain on the groin and knee.

Daily life: walking, traveling, and beyond

Walking
  • A healthy hip joint acts as a stable hinge that powers your stride. When hips are tight or weak, you may compensate with the lower back, knees, or ankles—often leading to discomfort or overuse injuries.
  • Good hip function can improve gait efficiency, reduce energy cost of walking, and delay fatigue on long days of sightseeing.
Travel
  • Airports, trains, and long car rides demand sustained postures and occasional lifting. Hips that are mobile and strong help you get in and out of cars, luggage handling, and navigating stairs without pain.
  • Prolonged sitting can tighten hip flexors and glutes. Maintaining hip mobility can counteract stiffness, improve circulation, and prevent stiffness after long journeys.

2) Why hip mobility and strength matter together

Mobility and strength are two sides of the same coin:

  • Mobility: The ability of the hip joint to move through its full range of motion. Adequate mobility reduces compensations and preserves joint health.
  • Strength: The ability of the muscles around the hip (glutes, hip flexors, abductors, adductors, deep external rotators) to generate force and stabilize the pelvis during movement.

Together, they:

  • Improve movement efficiency: Smooth hips allow for cleaner, more energy-efficient strides, rotations, and kicks.
  • Enhance joint protection: Strong muscles absorb impact and control joints, lowering the risk of overuse injuries.
  • Support posture and back health: The hips are a key link between the legs and spine. When the hips function well, the low back and pelvis stay aligned during daily activities and athletic tasks.

3) Simple at-home checks to gauge hip function

Mobility check (3 quick screens):

  • Hip flexion with knee to chest: Lie on your back, bring one knee toward your chest while the other leg stays straight. Note if the leg lifts or pelvis tilts.
  • Hip extension in standing: Face a wall, place your hands on the wall for balance, and swing one leg straight back behind you without arching your back. Compare both sides.
  • Hip internal/external rotation in a seated position: With hips and knees at 90 degrees, gently rotate your knees toward/away from each other.

Strength check (single-leg stability):

  • Single-leg stance: Stand on one leg for 30–60 seconds. Observe wobble, hip drop, or lateral movement. Compare sides.
  • Glute bridge: Lie on your back with knees bent, feet flat. Lift hips to a bridge, squeezing glutes at the top. Pause, then lower. Note if one side drops or if you can’t hold the position.

If you notice pain, a clear asymmetry, or difficulty completing these checks, consider a free assessment.

4) When to seek professional care

While the above plan helps many people, some signs indicate you should see a PT:

  • Sharp, focal hip or groin pain that doesn’t improve with rest
  • Pain radiating to the knee or back
  • Persistent stiffness or weakness despite home exercises
  • Trouble walking or performing basic tasks without pain

A PT can provide a tailored assessment, address muscular imbalances, and guide you through a progressive program that fits your activity level and goals.

6) Quick tips for summer success

  • Warm up before activities: 5–10 minutes of hip-focused movements to prepare the joints and muscles.
  • Progress gradually: Increase intensity or duration of activities by no more than 10–20% per week.
  • Hydration matters: Hot weather increases fatigue and can affect muscle performance.
  • Cross-train: Pair cardio with strength work to keep hips resilient across all activities.
  • Listen to your body: If something hurts in a way that feels different from normal muscle fatigue, ease back and seek guidance.

The Final Spin: Flexible Hips, Stronger Steps

Your hips are engines that power almost every movement you enjoy in summer and daily life. By prioritizing mobility and strength, you’ll move more efficiently, reduce the risk of pain, and get more out of every activity—from a refreshing swim to a long travel day.
